Dexy’s Midnight Runners took their name from the drug Dexedrine, more commonly known as "speed" or "Dexy’s". This drug speeds up the metabolism (hence runners) and inhibits sleep (hence midnight), so they became known as "Dexy’s Midnight Runners".
